Wow! What a beautiful week coming up for this area!
Date Released: 2019-03-12 The first grizzly bear sighting of 2019 occurred in Yellowstone National Park just days ago. On Friday, March 8, visitors observed a large grizzly bear between Canyon Village and Fishing Bridge. Additionally, grizzly tracks were reported between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction on Monday, March 11.
After today, we’ll have some hints of spring! As a reminder, before you hit the hay tonight, spring those clocks forward one hour!
It’s been a pretty good winter for snow... a bit strange with temperatures all over the place and recent high winds, that always bring new challenges. But, spring is right around the corner and it’s time to get a start on the busy summer season. Plowing in certain areas in YNP is already underway. Soon, we will be stocking our store shelves with all sorts of new products... products like custom T-shirts and etched glassware, made right here in Silver Gate, over these long, cold winter days and nights. Hey! And daylight saving time Starr’s this Sunday! Can you believe it?
Dropped to 29 below this morning, but a warming trend is coming this week. Maybe this was the last cold streak, for this winter.

SNOW CONTEST WINNER! This was the most difficult and disappointing contest, to date. Our two feet or more of snow, went and stayed to the north. Watching local meteorologists, explain what happened, was a head shaker. If we had known better what these series of storms were going to do, we would have extended this contest out to this Friday... they are trying to predict that we still have two feet coming by Friday. We have serious doubts. So, with all the high winds, this was beyond difficult to measure. In the past, what we did, was take multiple measurements and average out the best we could, for each day. Believe it or not, our grand total of snow for this contest, is only........... 7.875”. Quite the let down, huh? Thanks for playing along. Maybe next time, it will be more exciting for us... and for all of you. By scrolling through all the guesses, the best that we can determine, the winning guess is 8.2”, made by Celine Frick. If anyone sees anything different than that, let us know.

Much of the major snowfall has missed us, but the winds have been crazy! Seems most of these storms are staying to the north of us. That’s not good for those who guessed high numbers in our snow contest. We always warn everyone, no matter what they try to predict for us, it’s rarely accurate.

Let’s do this! By request, from many of you, it’s back for the first time this winter! SNOW CONTEST! For those of you that have followed us for so many years, know that when a good storm or series of storms are predicted, we love to have a contest, to guess how many inches will fall in a certain time frame. This contest will start at Noon on Saturday and the last measurement will be taken at 8:00 AM Tuesday morning. We will take measurements at least twice a day, clearing the snow collection area, each time for a fresh start. We will add each measurement for a running total. Get specific with your guess, like 11.25”, etc. Try not to duplicate your guess with someone else. Post your guess for the snow total below in the comments. Only one guess is allowed. Look at various weather sites for zip code 59081, Silver Gate, Montana to see the forecast. As always, it could be much more or less than their predictions. This area is very hard to predict for any weather, let alone snowfall. This is all for fun, but the winner, whoever is closest, over or under, will win a prize from our store. Brrrrrrrrr.... 25 below this morning. Snow is on the way. How much? Depending on what site you look at, it could be a foot or even much more. It’s a wait and see kind of winter.
It is a beautiful, crisp, clear, moonlit, winter night, here in Silver Gate, Montana.
In the last week or so, we’ve probably picked up a foot or more of new snow. Nothing to brag about, but it did cover up a lot of the older, nasty looking snow. They called for one inch today, and four inches dropped. You just never know, no matter what the weatherman calls for. Never the less, it’s very pretty up here, right now!

As you can guess, this is an all-time favorite for Cheryl. She used colored polymer clay that is wrapped around a short tin can, then oven baked to harden. Notice the wood grain look around the outside? That is all multi-colored polymer clay that is rolled and layered to obtain that realistic wood appearance. A winter scene is meticulously placed inside, surrounded by glittering snow. This ornament also features glow in the dark snow on the roof of the log cabin, surrounding trees and mountains. It's a very cool scene, when you turn off the lights. A small Santa, snowman and spotted deer with a couple pine trees, fills the front section. The last light, after a cold, yet beautiful November day, on Republic Peak.
Last night, as Tom was preparing to turn in, the four cats scrambled in all directions and the two dogs ran to the front picture window and listened with composure... not too excited or too concerned. Once Tom heard the eerie sound, he knew exactly what it was. He grabbed his camera with a long lens, turned on the flood lights and stepped outside. Some people have heard this wildlife call or scream, not knowing what is was... and many more have never heard it. Once winter hits and the snow is on the ground, the foxes become more active... and vocal. Even though he has filmed this activity in the past, it's very hard to actually catch one calling, at night, under the lights. Luckily, this fox was a local... not too spooky and not too friendly. But, he did offer a few moments of fame, as he stepped out of the darkness, whistled through his nose, (that you should hear if you turn up the volume), then offered a few mild calls. As winter progresses and the mating season nears, these calls and screams are much more intense and can be heard for miles, echoing off the surrounding mountains. Are these warnings to others or a call to a mate? Wildlife experts, aren't sure.
